rect() is my genesis generative art collection. I'd love to tell you an elaborate story of how the artwork came to me in a dream, or on some emotional psychedelic journey. But the truth is, I just wanted to learn code and make cool art.
I started on this path to learn p5.js in summer 2023. My background in Web3 is pixel art, so working with the grid was what felt natural. After that, I just wanted the output artwork to be something that would translate well into print, and maybe look cool hanging on a wall at home or the office.
The collection features 40 different colour palettes. 20 of my own palettes, and 20 that reference artists or artwork from Web3. I've utilised this large selection of colour options combined with variable grid sizes to create a collection that has a wide variety in the outputs whilst maintaining a definitive feeling of continuity through the collection. There is also a pixel level grain effect to add a finishing texture to the artwork that will reduce as the dimensions of the output increase in size, which is by design.
For those wondering, if you're not aware, rect() is a function from the p5.js JavaScript library that was designed for creative coding. This function is used to draw rectangle shapes and is at the heart of my code. It also felt like quite a cool title as the terminology of being rekt / wrecked / rect is common in Web3. So, I saw it as a tittle that gives a nod to the nerds and code writers, but also the NFT collectors and meme coin traders that make the space what it is.
With this being my genesis generative art collection, I have no idea how well it will be received. So, after much deliberation, I decided to release rect() as a free mint. Instead of making primary sales, I will be allocating 10% of the supply to myself. The market will then decide the value of my collection, not me. There will be an Allowlist for Web3 communities and friends that have supported me in recent years, followed by the public mint.
Lastly, big thanks to @r4ndomh who reached out to help a complete stranger when I was stuck and panicking back in 2023. We've since become good friends. I'm only here at this point now thanks to you.
I hope you all like my outputs.
