Sandscapes CC0 Specials: The Memes by 6529 is a fully onchain p5js script by Burcin IO that extends the original Sandscapes simulation into a shared cultural layer of crypto art. Each token initializes its generative system from the pixel data of one of the first 420 pieces from The Memes by 6529 collection, fetched directly from their Arweave transaction IDs. The code reconstructs every meme’s color DNA and releases it as a living sand simulation, as a visual echo of open-source culture and decentralized art. The series merges on-chain generativity with Arweave’s permanence and 6529’s CC0 philosophy to create a meditative experience for the meme and digital art lovers while it’s sharing half of the project proceedings (including the royalties) with the artist Hugo Faz’s project ‘Casa NUA’ and ‘FORMOSA 2025’. The Memes are large edition, CCO (public domain) NFTs that are actively encouraged to be spread far and wide, to be remixed, to be rememed and to be reinterpreted by the world at large. We believe that permissionless NFTs on decentralized public blockchains should used as the default ownership layer for digital objects - profile pictures, avatars, art, virtual spaces, game objects, identities and so on - and that application providers should reference that ownership layer. This is what we call "the open metaverse". We think whether our digital objects are recorded in centralized corporate databased or user-owned public blockchains is the most consequential technology decision in our society right now. Learn More About The Memes: All The Memes: 6529.io/the-memes Artist Statement by Burcin IO Initialization has a strategic place in Sandscapes script; the first pulse that determines the mood of the simulation. This time, the source isn’t random noise or a mathematical seed; it’s the raw pixel memory of The Memes by 6529 collection. Every piece begins by decoding its Arweave transaction data and reorganizing it as sand: drifting colors that carry the residue of shared cultural material. This project is both homage and experiment. I’m testing how collective imagery (memes, symbols, aesthetic fragments) can reanimate as generative matter. It’s an act of translation from meme to motion, from stored data to evolving texture. Also the first push on the Sandscapes project to expand its boundries. The Memes by 6529 is an expanding collection but I wanted to capture the first 420 memes in the collection and map it into my own generative ecosystem. Also; It was the last minted meme at the time I started work on the script. Like the original Sandscapes, this script refuses screen constraints and resolution limits. It’s inclusive; accepting every media type, every weight of data. It treats GIFs, videos and images as equal sand sources. Each render, each refresh chooses a different frame, a different structure of color flow. The project exists under CC0. It belongs to no one and everyone. What you see on screen is a small negotiation between code, decentralized storage and open cultural property. I’m so happy that the half of the project’s earnings will go to Casa NUA and FORMOSA 2025 by my dear friend Hugo FAZ. His passion on art, freedom and culture is something I highly admire. Technical Appendix — Sandscapes CC0 Specials: The Memes by 6529 Runtime system The artwork is implemented entirely in p5.js and runs client-side in the browser. The full generative logic, including initialization, simulation, and fallback routines, is embedded in artwork-p5.js, ensuring the script is self-contained and on-chain-compatible for 256.art deployment. It operates as a deterministic system: given a token ID and the corresponding meme’s Arweave transaction, the same visual simulation will always regenerate identically. Initialization method Each simulation begins by fetching pixel data from the Arweave-hosted meme file associated with its token. Supported input types include video/*, image/*, image/gif, and HTML documents containing visual elements (handled through a flexible fetch pipeline). The initialization phase converts decoded RGB values into the first sand distribution map, defining both color palette and particle origins. Randomized frame extraction from GIFs and videos introduces dynamic diversity while maintaining deterministic replay via seeded randomness. Before every initialization, there goes a decodinng process which can take 1to15secondns depending on the media type and network/connection metrics meanwhile the screen reads the meme artist and meme title with the project name in movie title format with a little glitch animation. Rendering The simulation runs in real time via a particle-based diffusion system that evolves the sand pixels over time, forming emergent color clusters and self-organizing “flows.” It is fully resolution-agnostic and adapts to any screen size without ratio dependency. A hard pixel cap and dynamic downscaling logic ensure stable performance across devices while retaining maximum color variation. Error handling and fallback Multiple Arweave gateways are tested sequentially (arweave.net, ar-io.dev, and others) to ensure resilient content retrieval. In case all gateways fail or a file exceeds decode limits, the script triggers a global fallback initialization: a vibrant text&emoji&color-based simulation reading
“NO CDN IN REACH — ENJOY THE FALLBACK.” This ensures every mint remains visually active and self-contained, with no hard failure state. Storage and decentralization The full script and metadata are stored fully on-chain on Ethereum mainnet. Visual initialization data is fetched decentrally from Arweave, making the system a hybrid on-/off-chain construct. Some HTML memes use Rarible’s Arweave mirrors to guarantee compatibility where native Arweave paths fail. Determinism and distribution The minting process uses an ordered but shuffled assignment mechanism:
each token sequentially takes a unique meme from the first 420 of The Memes by 6529 while keeping blind mint unpredictability. This ensures full coverage of the 420 memes with no duplicates. Licensing As with the source material, all outputs are CC0. Each simulation inherits the open cultural spirit of The Memes by 6529, forming a derivative yet autonomous digital landscape. Partnership and credits Deployed on 256.art, utilizing p5.js for rendering, Arweave for decentralized storage, and Ethereum for on-chain metadata and contract permanence. Occasional storage redundancy is provided through Rarible Arweave mirrors. 50% of earnings are directed to the Casa NUA initiative by Hugo Faz.
